Guardians of the Coast: Meet the First Responders Who Answer the Call

With summer right around the corner, the Ocean Institute invites the community to a powerful evening focused on maritime safety and public awareness.

On June 4 from 6PM to 8PM, the Institute’s Distinguished Speaker Series continues with an unforgettable evening titled “Guardians of the Coast: Meet the First Responders Who Answer the Call.” This panel discussion will unite public safety experts from Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA), Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD), and Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) for an engaging and eye-opening conversation about how our local waters—and the people who enjoy them—are protected every single day.

At the helm of this conversation is Colin Harris, a marine safety expert assigned to one of the world’s most advanced fireboats based out of the Port of Long Beach. Harris will be joined by team members from each agency, offering the public a rare chance to hear directly from the professionals who manage search and rescue operations, boat fires, chemical and radiological emergencies, submersible sonar deployment, aerial coordination, and recovery missions.

The event will include practical information about how to call for help, what happens when a marine emergency occurs, and the tools and training these agencies use to respond swiftly and safely. More than a lecture, the evening will feel like a live behind-the-scenes briefing, complete with a Q&A session where guests can ask their own safety questions. 

To set the scene for a relaxed yet impactful evening, the Ocean Institute will offer a bar with drinks and light snacks available for purchase. The event is open to the public for $10, with free admission for Ocean Institute members and students with a valid ID.
