Join California State Parks for a Grunion Run on Tuesday, June 2 at 8:30 PM at Doheny State Beach, with participants meeting at Picnic Area A for this unique nighttime educational experience. During the event, park naturalists will guide guests through the fascinating phenomenon of grunion spawning and explain the science behind this natural occurrence along the California coast.
Grunion are small, silvery marine fish that come ashore to spawn on sandy beaches during high tides following the new and full moon. This family-friendly event is suitable for all ages and offers a rare opportunity to observe the grunion run in its natural habitat while learning more about local marine life and coastal ecosystems.
Guests are encouraged to bring flashlights with red filters if available, beach chairs, and warm clothing for the evening. This is a free event; however, standard day-use parking fees apply. Please note that grunion season is currently closed, so this is an observation-only event and no take is permitted.
